Metrics are an essential foundation for evaluating presidential performance at colleges and universities—but they are only one piece of a larger picture. Effective governance requires boards to assess not only what leaders accomplish, but also how they lead, where they are headed, and how their vision aligns with the evolving needs of the institution. This session introduces a flexible evaluation framework designed to give boards a comprehensive and balanced view of presidential performance using data-driven categorical framing.

This webinar explores how to combine measurable goals with leadership characteristics, institutional stewardship, and leadership development. Our speakers offer practical guidance for designing the evaluation process, incorporating presidential self-assessment, gathering stakeholder input, and comparing perspectives. They also discuss how evaluation should adapt to different leadership contexts—from onboarding new presidents to supporting long-tenured leaders as they prepare for succession.

In addition, the webinar examines the value of developing a Presidential Leadership Profile—a board-created specification of qualities and capabilities—and weighs its potential benefits and risks. The program concludes with governance best practices on timing, data collection, and board-level review, as well as integrating evaluation results with incentive compensation plans.

At Pearl Meyer, we work with boards and organizations to design and implement compensation and leadership strategies that build great management teams.
